Warren-Mott had a message for Division 1 sprint relay teams.
“We didn’t go anywhere,” senior Trevon Madison said.
The Marauders’ 800-meter foursome turned in one of its better performances at the Harold Arft Sterling Heights Invitational on May 3, but an exchange-zone infraction wiped out what would have been a first-place finish and a jolt of confidence.
“We used that,” coach Adam Diaz said. “We learned from it. We took that time of 1:30.6 and knew we can run that time.”
The Marauders demonstrated Friday how much they had “learned.”
The team of Carvin Coleman, James Murray, Madison and Darius Willis blazed to a first-place finish at the regional meet on the Marauders’ track. The team had a sub-1:30 finish that broke the Warren-Mott record and renewed the Marauders’ hopes for a special finish at the state finals at East Kentwood on June 1.
“We knew we had to make a statement,” Madison, a Ferris State football recruit, said. “We adjusted the day after that (Sterling Heights) meet.”
Madison gave the Marauders the lead on the third leg of the relay, and Willis brought home the record.
“I pushed it as hard as I could,” Michigan Tech football recruit Willis said. “That’s all I had.”
The performance caught Diaz off guard.
“I didn’t expect 1:28.96,” he said. “That broke our school record, which we set last year, by a few seconds. That puts us in contention at the state meet. That’s a dangerous time.”
Coleman, a hurdler who ran the lead leg of the relay, is a junior. The other members of the team are seniors.
“Each one has their own niche,” Diaz said. “Darius is never going to quit; that’s why he anchors.”
Madison qualified for the state finals in the 100 dash as the Marauders showed their speed throughout the day.
Warren-Mott also won the 400 relay.
Dakota was the team champion.
The Cougars’ Joe Jaster won the 1600 meters, and then the senior saluted those who have boosted his career.
“I couldn’t be here without my fantastic training partners, my teammates, my coaches,” Jaster said. “My support system has been amazing -- my parents and everybody. I thank them all.”
Jaster, the school record holder in the 3200 meters, is going to Case Western Reserve. He’ll major in biomedical engineering and run cross country and track.
But before that chapter of his life begins, he’ll wear the Dakota colors in the state finals.
“That’s the big dance,” he said. “An all-state accolade has been my goal all season. That would be amazing.”

Tim Hunt of Port Huron Northern cleared 14-3 to win the boys pole vault. Two county vaulters also qualified as runner-up Al Biland of Anchor Bay vaulted a personal-best 13-6 and Kas Juncaj of Sterling Heights went 13-0.
The top two finishers in each event advanced to the finals. Others advanced by meeting standards set by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
In the girls regional, ninth-grader Cora Kolodge of Anchor Bay and senior Reynei Wallace of Chippewa Valley were multi-event winners and Dakota was the team champion.

Reynei Wallace of Chippewa Valley won three sprints and anchored the winning 800-meter relay at the Division 1 regional at Warren-Mott
Kolodge anchored a qualifying 3200 relay team and then won the 1600, 800 and 3200 races,
Wallace, a senior who’s headed to Indiana State, won the 100, 200 and 400 dashes and anchored the first-place 800 relay.
Kolodge broke the Anchor Bay record for the 1600 at the Sterling Heights meet and broke it again a week ago at the Dakota Invitational.
“It’s definitely exhausting,” Kolodge said of her day at the regional. “Four events is a lot.”
Kolodge’s split in the relay broke her personal best by six seconds.
“This is so overwhelming in a good way,” she said. “It’s crazy how good the running community is, how much they support me.”
Jenna Doyle of Troy Athens emerged from a crowded field to win the high jump. She cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 6 inches to lead four state qualifiers, including Micah Martin of L’Anse Creuse.
“The great competition elevated my performance,” Doyle said. “I was around a lot of other great girls.”
Doyle had an enthusiastic cheering section that included her mother, Kim Doyle, and grandmother Lynne Treharne.
“It helps. Definitely,” she said of having fans behind her.
Doyle, who’ll jump at Grand Valley State, finished third in the state last year.
Her goal for 2019?
“Go for it, all the way,” she said.
