Balanced Dakota defeats Grosse Pointe South in girls MAC Red track meet
By Chuck Klonke For MediaNews Group
Dakota defeated Grosse Pointe South in a MAC Red track meet Tuesday, leaving the Cougars with a 4-0 record in division meets.
In the long run, Dakota’s girls track team appears to be the class of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division.
And by the way, the Cougars are pretty good in the short run, too.
Dakota continued to dominate the MAC Red Tuesday when it took first in all but three events on the way to a 108.5-28.5 victory against Grosse Pointe South.
The win improved the Cougars to 4-0 in the division. South fell to 3-1.
“Our strength is in the distances,” said coach Tom Zarzycki. “We have three girls under 5:30 in the mile at this point. Our 4x800 relay team is running 9:40 and beating Romeo last week was a big plus for them.
“Jayden (Harberts) and Emma (Myziuk) are kind of the leaders and they drag everyone with them.”
Harberts won the 1,600- and 800-meter runs and Myziuk was her chief competition in each.
“We definitely work together,” said Myziuk, who will continue her track career at Oakland University next year. “The strength built up by working together is what makes this what it is. We were all real close in cross country and it definitely carries over into track as well. We’re also strong as a team.”
Harberts and Myziuk might be the leaders among the distance runners, but they have help piling up the points for the Cougars. Ava LaMilza and Lindsay Harvey finished 1-2 in the 3,200. Katie Slone, LaMilza, Harvey and Mariah Belmont won the 3,200 relay and Belmont’s third gave the Cougars a sweep in the 800.
“The friendly competition makes it fun,” said Myziuk. “I’m trying to get my mile time down to sub-5:10. I’m going to keep working on the two mile and definitely on the 800 to get it sub-2:20. I’m just working on these goals up until state. I’m excited about this year and what’s left of it. I’ve improved a lot since my sophomore year.”
Dakota took both sprints, winning the 100 and 200 behind sophomores Danielle Modock and Angelina Isakov.
Dakota dominated the field events. Jenny Zaprawa won the shot put and discus and Janan Khalil was second in each. Gianah Krok and Michelle Teremi gave the Cougars a sweep in both throws.
Isakov had a big day, winning the high jump and 200 and anchoring the 800 relay. Earlier this year, Isakov set a sophomore school record with 5-feet-6 in the high jump, the second best effort in school history.
“She has a lot of potential,” Zarzycki said. “Who knows how high she can go? She does 5-6 now and I think she has a lot more in her. She won the 200 today, but I think she’ll be more of a 400 runner. And she’s a competitor. She future is bright for her.”
Dakota’s other individual winners were Mia Dagati (pole vault) and Chelsea Harvey (long jump). The Cougars won all four relays.
“After missing last season, a lot of kids are just learning and figuring things out,” Zarzycki said. “I can see huge improvement. We have good young kids and good quality leadership with our seniors. Across the board, we keep coming at people. No one can take a break with us. We have good quality kids. It’s going to be one of those seasons where you wish you had two more weeks.”
Steve Zaranek, in his 42nd year as South coach, has a young team but he has been pleased with its progress.
“Our numbers are way down compared to what they usually are but we have some bright young talent,” he said .”We knew Dakota was super strong this year and our goal was to try to hold them under 100 points. It looks like we have a good chance to finish second in the MAC Red and a pretty good chance to be competitive at the state regional because we have a few top-level runners.
“Eighty percent of our team is brand new — ninth and 10th graders. We’re real happy with our sophomore class, we have some up and comers in the ninth grade and just enough senior leadership to make it fun and keep it together.”
The Blue Devils got victories from Selga Jansons in both hurdles races and from Katy Griffin in the 400.
“Selga, a sophomore, has been dominating in the hurdles,” Zaranek said. “She had spectacular times today. She’s very versatile. She’s on our sprint relays, the open sprints and the hurdles. Katy Griffin had her best time in the open 400, close to 60-flat. She had a great 200 and does long jump and other relays. Those girls are the core of our team.”

Jacob Harberts wins two distance events in Dakota track victory over Grosse Pointe South
By Chuck Klonke For MediaNews Group
Jacob Harberts of Dakota wins the 1600-meter run against Grosse Pointe South on Tuesday.
Jacob Harberts is closing out his high school track career on a winning note and he gives his sister a lot of the credit.
“Last year was hard,” said Harberts, who won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and held off Grosse Pointe South’s James Borowicz to win the 1,600 relay Tuesday and lead Dakota to a 90-47 victory against the Blue Devils in a meet between the final two unbeaten teams in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division.
“I had very little motivation on my own. My sister really had to drag me out of the house to keep me sharp. That’s the only reason I’m doing this well, to be honest.”
His sister is Jayden Harberts, the Macomb County girls individual cross country champion last fall, and a double-winner herself in the girls victory against South.
“It’s kind of fantastic,” said Dakota coach Mike Timpa. “Our state finalists (in cross country) were a brother and sister team. I don’t know if we’ve ever had a brother and sister qualify at the same time. It’s a cool family story.
“Jacob has been huge. He’s stepped it up another notch this year. In the meet against Romeo (a 69-67 Dakota win) he was in another world. He wants to win. He wants to make the team proud. He’s been a fantastic leader for us. We have a great group of seniors.”
While Jacob gives Jayden credit for getting him motivated during the pause for the pandemic, Jayden said that Jacob was instrumental in getting her started running competitively.
“I was running with coach Derrick Kelley with 16Ways (Track Club) and she hopped into the club with us,” Jacob said. "I’m very proud of what she’s done. She deserves everything she gets.”
Jacob Harberts won the mile in 4:36.2, then came back to win the 3,200 by more than 49 seconds. Borowicz came from behind and nearly caught him in the 1,600 relay but Harberts edged him by .02.
Harberts said he used some strategy in winning the 1,600.
“I didn’t let (Logan Detweiler) lead because we were going about the same pace,” Harberts said. “I just waited to the last 200 and he couldn’t stick with me.”
Harberts said that this year he has been pulling away at the end of races.
“This year a lot of races are more tactical, going out slower and finishing as fast as you can,” he said.
Dakota swept the first places in the field events, building a 37-8 lead.
“Our throwers came through big-time,” Timpa said. “Riley Smarlarz is new to the sport and he threw 45-feet-9 in the shot put. Jack Murray won the discus with 146-10. We took 1-2-3 in both of those.”
Jordan Vernon hit 19-0 for the first time in the long jump. Caden Ott celebrated his birthday by winning the pole vault in a tie breaker. Zachary Webb, who set the school record in the high jump earlier this season when he cleared 6-6, won with a 6-2.
“He did 6-9 indoors,” Timpa said. “Indoors you have no weather to compete with and when you’re focusing on one event it’s a little easier.”
Webb took second to South’s Miles Murray in the 200.
Vernon also won the high hurdles. Dakota’s other individual firsts came from Keyone Nixon (100), Andrew Milosavlevski (400) and Matthew Singer (300 hurdles).
Dakota’s 400 relay team of Caiden Sloan, Nixon, DJ Stepney and Corey Royster had a season-best winning time of 43.81.
“We just chip away one event at a time,” Timpa said. “(Grosse Pointe South) is fantastic. I’m sure they had this meet circled on their calendar. Once we squeaked by Romeo, we said Grosse Pointe South is the team to beat. They gave us a run for our money, but fortunately things went our way.”
Blue Devils coach Mark Sonnenberg has turned his program into a league contender in his four years at the helm.
“This is my alma mater and I said if I was going to take over, I was going to turn it around and I think we have,” Sonnenberg said. “We were regional champs two years ago and we probably would have been last year. We have our sights set on it this year.
“Dakota beat us today but we beat them (98-97) over the weekend (at the Anchor Bay Relays). We’re a good team. I’m a little frustrated today. In four years we have four individual losses and all of them to Dakota.”
Sonnenberg praised the effort of Borowicz on the anchor leg of the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay team of Detweiler, Jacob Vallan, Charlie Rulison and Brendan Downey. Rulison and Vallan finished 1-2 in the 800.
“They ran an impressive 8:17 (in the 3,200 relay),” Sonnenberg said. “Our pole vaulter (Jack Michaud) is on track to make it to states. Our relays are good.”
