Macomb CC's Slone went from reluctant runner to NJCAA finalist
  • By Chuck Pleiness For The Macomb Daily
  •
    • May 14, 2019
    •
Ally Slone on running for Macomb Community College: 'I feel a lot of kids don’t view Macomb as an option because they’re not the fastest of the fastest even though they love to run. With Macomb there is that opportunity that otherwise you might not have.'
Macomb Community College photo
Ally Slone didn’t want to take up running.
Now she’s glad she did.
Slone, along with her Macomb Community College teammate Morgan Markel, will compete at the 2019 NJCAA Division I   National Outdoor Track and Field Championships at New Mexico Junior College, May 16-18.
“I really didn’t want to run,” Slone recalled. “I mean I kind of did, but I was scared. I thought I would be slow and suck.
“I remember my dad dropping me off at my first practice and leaving,” Slone added. “That’s kind of how I got going.”
By the end of her sophomore year at Dakota High School she started falling in love with running.
“What made me stay were the people,” Slone said. “Everyone is very welcoming. Cross country kids are the most welcoming group of people to be a part of. Everybody contributes something to the group and everyone is valued.”
“That’s when I really started to think about running in college,” Slone added. “I knew it was possible. My goal was to get a scholarship.”
Slone, who was named all-state and all-region in cross country, had offers from other schools but chose Macomb Community College to get her feet wet.
“I’ve got three other siblings so this kept me close to home and I could continue running,” Slone said. “Macomb ended up being the best of both worlds.
“I feel a lot of kids don’t view Macomb as an option because they’re not the fastest of the fastest even though they love to run,” Slone continued. “With Macomb there is that opportunity that otherwise you might not have.”
Slone will continue competing at Rochester College after this season.
“It’s nice now being able to go away to school,” Slone said. “People always asked why I didn’t go away to school. I wanted to, but if you can’t afford it. At Macomb I got to continue to compete and get my school paid for.
“We still competed against the big schools, Michigan State and Oakland,” Slone continued. “So it’s no different, but if I were running at a bigger school they have so much more talent and so many other kids to focus on. Here at Macomb I got the training and a lot of individual attention from the coaches that I may not have been able to get somewhere.”
Slone believes the more focused training has helped her get to where she’s at today.
“Coaches at a bigger school tend to care more about the runners there on scholarship,” Slone said. “Unless you’re sitting in a position where you could potentially be earning a scholarship in a season or two I think they kind of focus on the rest.”
Slone qualified for nationals in cross country both years. This season she qualified for both indoor and outdoor nationals.
“I think I competed well, but it’s an eye opener,” Slone said of her trip to nationals. “From last year to this year I’m more prepared.
“Going there last year was intimidating,” Slone added. “I know what I’m doing now. We’ve earned our spot to be here and that’s why we’re here.”
Slone will compete in the 1,500 meters this coming week.
“I know what’s going on now,” said Slone, who has a 4.0 grade-point average. “It’s a new experience too. I feel like without cross country or track I wouldn’t be who I am today. At this point the thought of not running after Macomb is really a ridiculous thought because there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing more.
“I’m a better runner today than I was when I started,” Slone ended.
